He is a troubled and hidden character who falls deeply in love with Christine but who terrifies her by his mysterious and frightening approaches.

In one critical encounter, Christine unmasks the Phantom discovering a new sympathy for him, and his conscience is awakened. Their relationship is doomed, but for the Phantom, his feelings last a lifetime.
