Marilyn, the Musical

MarilynMarilyn tells the sad story of 1950s film-star Marilyn Monroe

Monroe was an iconic actress, famous for her relationships as well as her career. Married to baseball player Joe DiMaggio at a young age, and subsequently to playwright Arthur Miller, Marilyn Monroe was in the spotlight on and off the camera. Marilyn the musical attempts not only to depict some of Monroe’s famous musical performances, but also to tell the real story about the mysterious character. Having spent much of her childhood in foster homes, Marilyn Monroe began her career as a model, and subsequently went on to land her first movie role in 1946. Proving a hit in comedy films, Marilyn flourished in comedic roles and received adoration from her growing fan base.

Composed by Michael Dresser, the Marilyn Monroe show has been in the pipeline since 2000. The musical sees ballerina Zara Deakin taking the lead role. Deakin is experienced in the role of a blonde heroine, having played Diana Princess of Wales in a work by award-winning choreographer, Schauffus. As well as working on Marilyn, Schauffus has also produces a show called Satisfaction, based on the music of The Rolling Stones.

Zara Deakin will perform as Marilyn alongside 14 other dancers. Songs will include Happy Birthday Mr President, I Wanna Be Loved By You and My Heart Belongs To Daddy. With a limited number of performances at the Apollo Theatre Marilyn tickets will be in high demand. The show begins in June 2009.
