A Russian dissident Alexander Ivanov is imprisioned in a mental institution. If he accepts that he has a (non-existent) mental disorder, he will be released. He refuses.
Sharing his cell is a real lunatic, also named Ivanov, who believes himself to be surrounded by an orchestra and in full command of them. As the dissident's son begs his father to free himself with a lie, the dark, comical play asks if denying the truth is a price worth paying for freedom.
