The National Gallery

The National Gallery in London contains over 2,300 paintings and is one of the greatest collections of Western European art in the world. The Gallery is situated in a Grade I listed building between the north side of Trafalgar Square and Orange Street. Its impressive porticos and dome are an established London landmark and one of its most famous visitor attractions.

The National Gallery was founded in 1824 when the House of Commons agreed to pay £57,000 for the picture collection of John Julius Angerstein. There were thirty-eight pictures in the collection, and these were the start of a national collection which was to be made available for the enjoyment and education of all.

The paintings in the National Gallery date from 1250 to the early 1900s. Highlights of the collection include Van Eyck's 'Arnolfini Portrait', Piero della Francesca's 'Baptism of Christ', Constable's 'Hay Wain', Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers', Cezanne's 'Bathers,' and Monet's 'Water-Lilies'. The Gallery also houses works by Michelangelo, Botticelli, Titian, Holbein, Raphael, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Turner, Seurat, and Picasso, plus many others.

Entrance to the National Gallery is free although there may be a charge for some exhibitions. The gallery is open daily. You can enjoy free guided tours and talks, or use the award-winning interactive guide Art-Start. The nearest tube stations are Charing Cross, Leicester Square, and Embankment.
