The Manchester Museum

One of the UK's finest university museums, The Manchester Museum provides an insight into a major British university, as well as a fascinating attraction. Located within the University grounds, The Manchester Museum houses almost 4.25 million items in its stunning gothic building.

In exploring the vast museum, you'll find an array of models, artefacts and exhibitions, including the largest and most important collection of Egyptian artefacts. The Egyptian collection includes items from prehistoric Egypt right up to the famous Byzantine era.

As well as Egyptian history, you can discover an extensive range of specimens in the celebrated Botany Collection, including flowering plants, ferns and all kinds of weird and wonderful funghi.

Other collections within the museum include archaeology, archery, human remains, live animals, living cultures, money, prehistoric life and rocks and minerals.

Your visit couldn't be easier. Collections are arranged across 15 galleries, with a shop, café and picnic area to keep you entertained. Manchester Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays, Mondays and Bank Holidays from 11am to 4pm. Admission to the museum is free, though there may occasionally be a charge for exhibitions.

The museum is located within Manchester University, a 15 minute walk from Oxford Road railway station. The museum is also served by many bus routes in the direction of Piccadilly Gardens from Manchester city centre.
