Chinese Arts Centre
You may not have known that Manchester has the second largest Chinese community in the UK, after London. With such a thriving Chinese community, it's no wonder that the world renowned Chinese Arts Centre is such a success. The centre aims to promote Chinese Art globally, and has found an enthusiastic audience in Manchester.
Established since 1986, the Chinese Arts Centre has seen an array of successful artists exhibit in Manchester with works including exhibitions, residencies, artist support schemes, publications, agency work, advocacy, consultancy, commissions, festivals, tours and collaborations.
With added funding in 2003 from the UK Lottery, the building has been expanded to include a gallery, live/work residency studio, tea house, shop, resource area, and opportunities for corporate hire. The venue is often used for functions and events, with it's stunning Jasmine Suite on the lower level of the Centre.
With its many channels for Chinese Art, the centre is able to give huge support to the local arts community. Publications from the centre offer an exploration into the critical and theoretical context of strands of contemporary Chinese Art.
Admission to the Chinese Arts Centre is free, and the centre is open from Tuesday to Saturday, excluding public holidays. Finding the centre on Thomas Street is easy, just a short walk from High Street, Market Street and Manchester Victoria stations. Nearby is the Greater Manchester Police Museum, as well as the Manchester Craft & Design Centre.
