Central Library
Located in the centre of Manchester, the Central Library is one of Manchester's most celebrated and iconic buildings. The library is worth a visit not just to browse the literary collection, but also to meet friends and admire the surroundings. Built in the early 1930s, Manchester Library was built with inspiration from the Pantheon building in Rome. The stunning Shakespeare Hall features a stained glass window depicting scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The Great Hall, home to the sciences and humanities libraries is often cited as the most spectacular feature of the building.
Manchester Central Library is made up of individual libraries, including an Arts library, Chinese library, Computer centre, General reader's library, music library, language and literature library, and many more.
The Arts library in particular has a comprehensive catalogue of texts on architecture, design, fashion, photography and film. The library also hosts an impressive collection of cult, art-house and classic films on video and DVD.
Each of the individual libraries within the Central Library have varying opening hours so be sure to contact the library before visiting. The majority of libraries open at 9am, with some remaining open until 8pm.
The St Peters Square location of the central library makes it easily accessible for any visitor to Manchester. St Peters Square has its own Metrolink tram stop opposite the library, so you'll have no trouble finding the venue. Other nearby attractions include Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester Town Hall, the Palace Theatre and Manchester Arts Centre.
