The National Gallery in London contains over 2,300 paintings and is one of the greatest collections of Western European art in the world. The Gallery is situated in a Grade I listed building between the north side of Trafalgar Square and Orange Street. The National Gallery was founded in 1824 when the House of Commons agreed to pay £57,000 for the picture collection of John Julius Angerstein. There were thirty-eight pictures in the collection, and these were the start of a national collection which was to be made available for the enjoyment and education of all.
The paintings in the National Gallery date from 1250 to the early 1900s. Highlights of the collection include Van Eyck's 'Arnolfini Portrait', Piero della Francesca's 'Baptism of Christ', Constable's 'Hay Wain', Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers', Cezanne's 'Bathers,' and Monet's 'Water-Lilies'. The Gallery also houses works by Michelangelo, Botticelli, Titian, Holbein, Raphael, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Turner, Seurat, and Picasso, plus many others.
