In recent history Kensington Palace is most heavily associated with Diana, Princess of Wales. Diana lived at Kensington Palace from the time of her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981 until her death in 1997. At the time of Diana's death Kensington Palace saw thousands upon thousands of visitors arriving to leave flowers, with over a million bouquets being left at the gates and queues of visitors entering the palace to sign the book of condolences.
The palace is also known as the residence for Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II's sister. Once the management of Princess Margaret's apartment was transferred to the Historic Royal Palaces it was opened to the public in 2004.
Kensington Palace began life as Nottingham House in the early 1600s. It was later transformed by William III and became Kensington House. As a royal residence it was loved and developed over subsequent years taking inspiration from rival palaces including Hampton Court Palace and Blenheim Palace.
On visiting Kensington Palace there are a number of highlights to look out for. The King's Gallery, designed by William Kent, is one of the most impressive royal galleries in the Historic Royal Palaces collection. Visit the Sunken Garden, a beautiful garden modelled on a similar landscape at Hampton Court Palace with vibrant and exotic flowers blooming in summer. Queen Victoria's bedroom is a highlight not to be missed. This is where Queen Victoria was awoken at the age of 18 and told that her uncle had died and that she was now Queen. The Royal Ceremonies Dress Collection is a fascinating look at the high society fashions that have been on display at various Kensington Palace events over the years.
Throughout summer Kensington Palace is open daily from 10am to 6pm. The palace is easily accessible from central London. You can take the District or Circle line to High Street Kensington or the Central line to Queensway for a five to ten minute walk to Kensington Palace.
