One of the Royal Parks, Hyde Park is considered to be one of the finest city parks in the world. With over 350 acres of park space this is the perfect haven in a bustling city. In the 1500s Henry VIII took control of the park and used it as a hunting ground for deer. Ever since Charles I subsequently allowed public access to the park and appointed a ranger it has developed into a hub for social events and outdoor performance.
There are many guided walks in Hyde Park taking visitors on a journey through the history and architecture of the park. You can also find guided Hyde Park walks covering the seasons with spring and summer walks showing you the stunning flowers on display in the park. Other walks include ‘Going Batty For Bats', ‘The Great Exhibition' and 'Walking With Giants'.
As well as guided walks, Hyde Park is host to many large events, including the ‘Wireless' concerts in the summer. Wireless has seen artists including Daft Punk, Kaiser Chiefs and Massive Attack in the past, with major artists returning for 2009. Hyde Park also hosts the ‘Hyde Park Calling' festivals which have seen legendary acts Aerosmith and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd performing on stage.
Hyde Park is also host to the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain. Opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 2004, the fountain celebrates Diana's life and invites visitors to sit on the side and dip their feet in the flowing water that runs through swirling streams towards a bubbling pool.
A seven mile Diana Memorial Walk takes visitors on a journey through four of London's Royal Parks, noting famous buildings and monuments associated with Diana along the way. The walk passes through Hyde Park, St James's Park, Green Park and Kensington Gardens.
