London Zoo

London Zoo

London Zoo, officially known as ZSL London Zoo, is situated in Regent's Park in central London, and covers 36 acres. It was opened in 1828, making it the oldest scientific zoo in the world. Owned and operated by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), it is a charity dedicated to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. ZSL also owns Whipsnade Zoo, and together the two zoos contain over 17,000 animals, and over 650 different species.

On your day out at London Zoo, you can expect to see giant anteaters, bearded pigs, Sumatran lions, Komodo dragons, pancake tortoises, red-kneed bird-eating spiders, moon jellyfish, rock hopper penguins, emus, and many other fascinating and rare species. Highlights of London Zoo include the Aquarium, the Reptile House, the African Bird Safari, Into Africa, the Bird House, and the Big Cats. Two new exhibits opened recently: Gorilla Kingdom is a new £5.3 million gorilla enclosure, and Clore Rainforest Lookout, is a South American rainforest which you can explore at both forest floor and canopy level.

There are over a dozen daily events at London Zoo and you can meet, feed, and track the animals. Visitors aged over sixteen can also enjoy a 'zoo keeper for a day' experience which involves mucking out rhinos, cleaning the penguin pool, and going behind the scenes at the big cats' enclosures (booking essential).

London Zoo is open every day except Christmas Day. Children under sixteen must be accompanied by an adult. The nearest underground station for London Zoo is Camden Town, a 15 minute walk away. There is also a scheduled London Waterbus service along Regent's Canal between Camden Lock or Little Venice, and London Zoo.
